A Softer Way to Reflect on Your Year

For the past few years, I've done an end-of-year exercise. One that is part reflection and part insight for the year ahead.

And every year, that includes celebrating the wins I collected along the way (or what I lovingly call evidence of progress).

This practice was born out of burnout, after one of the hardest years of my life.

I remember thinking, I'm exhausted… but what did I actually accomplish?

Truth - I hadn't been tracking anything, and I was measuring myself against what was unfinished, what went wrong, and not what was true.

Here's What I've Noticed After I do this Reflection

  • There is always more proof of progress than I remember.

  • There is always more growth than my brain wants to admit.

  • I get to relive the moments I felt proud of.

  • I reconnect to what genuinely energizes me.

  • And there is always a clearer sense of what I want next.

Here’s is Why it Matters

✅ It is about honoring who you are becoming and choosing where you want to go from here.

✅ It cultivates well-being and positive emotions.

✅ It expands our ability to handle adversity and stress.

Reflection Prompts

Reflection about your year isn't about hunting for what went wrong or where you fell short in your goals or anything else in your life.

Let these questions soften you into remembering what was real this year, and not just what was unfinished.

Evergreen trees at sunset with prompts: "Write out 10 wins. What can I do now? What made me proud? What brought joy? What did I let go of?"

Beyond Yearly Reflection, Benefits of Regular Reflection

If you are wondering what’s next or how do you keep track of everything that happens during a whole year, I encourage you to consider regular reflection and tracking.

It may not sound like the most important thing to do, but once you get into the habit, it becomes easier and your growth becomes more apparent.

Benefits of tracking daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly wins:

  • It removes the barrier Labels You Tell Yourself

  • Recognize the progress and achievements sooner

  • Cultivates well-being and positive emotions

  • Expands ability to handle adversity and stress

From that place, your year becomes a resource, not a reason to beat yourself up or talk yourself out of what's possible for you.
